About Functional Fitness

The case for physical activity

For many adults, growing older appears to involve an inevitable loss and energy, independence and function, but this really need not be the case. Frail health and loss of function associated with aging is, in large part due to lower levels of physical activity.

An ever increasing amount of research concludes that irrespective of a person’s age, or their health, financial or family life, few factors contribute as much to successful ageing as having a physical active lifestyle.

Functional aging

Functional aging seeks to classify an individual based on their ability to perform key day to day tasks and how well they their independence. While functional ability to achieve these tasks declines with advancing age, a healthy diet and a regular programme of physical activity/exercise can help slow and even reverse this decline and promote independence.

Pathologies associated with aging

When adults age, and particularly when they have been sedentary for prolonged periods throught their adult life, there is an increased risk of developing certain diseases and functional impairments.

On many occasions these pathologies associated with age come about due to lifestyle. An important point to note is that in most cases these conditions can be avoided and even reversed when a healthy diet and regular patterns of physical activity are followed. Common pathologies which are associated with aging include

  • Arthritis
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Depression
  • Osteoporosis
  • Heart disease
  • Certain cancers

Functional fitness

Functional fitness exercises train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily, real life, tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work or in sports. While using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, functional fitness exercises also emphasize core stability. It is against this background of what benefits functional fitness can bring that my fitness programmes and classes are based upon.
